Fungi & Art Walk

Trout Lake Community Centre 3360 Victoria Drive, Vancouver, BC, Canada

An experiential, educational, and artistic urban mushroom walking tour facilitated by mycologist and artist Willoughby Arevalo. Guided through sensorial and artistic explorations, each participant will be invited to reflect on the intersections between fungi, the urban ecosystem and the sensing/thinking body. Please arrive early to find parking, or organize group transportation among your friends. If you want a ride from Vancouver around Oak/Broadway (or wherever east of there too), I can pick you up. 2024 Summer Continental Mycoblitz – VMS Walk

Summer Continental Mycoblitz 2024: VMS Walk It's coming up to that time of year again where we can get out there and collect fungi for science! Join us in participating in a walk to collect specimens for the North American Mycoblitz, an amazing opportunity to obtain DNA barcode sequences from local specimens for just the cost of postage! Ludo and I will guide participants on how to upload photos to iNaturalist (https://www.inaturalist.org/), create voucher labels, and prepare specimens to be mailed in for sequencing. We encourage participants to download the iNaturalist app ahead of time if you are interested in contributing photographs or specimens to the mycoblitz project. Show Collection Urban Walk

If you don't have a car or are not planning on leaving the city to gather, a few of us will be conducting an urban survey on foot in Mt. Pleasant on Friday the 11th. We will collect specimens that we find and investigate connections between our city landscape and fungi. The group will meet at Riley Park Community Garden (50 E 30th Ave) at 11, and walk around the neighborhood before concluding at the Fish Counter on Main Street at around 1. Pacific Spirit Walk and Po Kong Dinner

Nov. 11th: Pacific Spirit Walk & Po Kong Dinner🥢 We will have an easy walk in the forest on November 11th at 12:30 to look at the fungi of Pacific Spirit Park. Our mushroom experts will identify the specimens we encounter and talk about the fungal associations within our local ecosystem. Come join us to celebrate the season before it gets too cold! Every year, we gather at Po Kong Vegetarian Restaurant to celebrate culinary mushrooms. Po Kong notably has a menu that features many fungi, including stinkhorn, lion's mane, enoki, wood ear, and more. How it Works: We will reserve 50 seats, 10 people per table. Each person orders 1 mushroom dish and all the food is shared family style. After the meal, the bill is divided by 10 with your tablemates. Monthly Meeting/ Foray with Leah Mycelia

ID Walk at Pacific Spirit Park with Leah Mycelia September 9th @ 11 am Next week, before our monthly meeting, we will be having a guided walk in the forest to look at the fungi of Pacific Spirit Park, which is home to a vast and diverse fungal community. Our special guest mycologist, Leah Bendlin will help to identify the specimens we encounter and talk about the fungal associations within our local ecosystem. Please join us at the parking area (4915 W 16th Ave) at 11 am sharp on Tuesday. The walk will be on the paths only and solely for educational purposes, leaving as little impact on the public space as possible. Feel free to bring your family, friends, kids, and leashed dogs. Manning Park Foray

Hi folks! We are excited to officially announce that the VMS will be returning to Manning Park once again for our annual weekend excursion from September 12-14, 2025. We'd love for you to be there! We will have lots of fun walks, talks, and bonding with your fellow fungi enthusiasts! Think of it as Mushroom Summer camp. The Last Resort Lodge in Manning Park boasts dorm-style shared accommodations for up to 50 people, and comes with amenities like shared washrooms, a communal fire pit, a dining and lounge area, access to pool and sauna facilities, and an outdoor picnic area. The VMS will provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as snacks and refreshments. We will be arriving at the lodge Friday evening and returning home Sunday afternoon. Please note that collecting of fungi within Manning is only for scientific purposes and not for consumption or dyes (unless folks choose to gather on their own outside the park).
